Durga Puja is believed to be the greatest festival of the people of Bengal. It is particularly popular in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisa, Assam, Tripura, Bangladesh and the diaspora from this region, and also in Nepal.
This great festival marks the battle of Goddess Durga and the Demon Mahishsura and her emerging victorious.
Making of the idol of Goddess Durga is an important activity of this festival. KUMARTULI is a place in KOLKATA ( CALCUTTA ) where the potters stay and make the idols of the Godess Durga, the demon Mahishasura, sons and daughters of the Goddess Durga and other idols related to the festival.
KUMARTULI is older than the city KOLKATA ( CALCUTTA ). It has started to grow with three little villages GOBINDAPUR, KALIKUTTA and SUTANOTI. In the middle of the 17th century potters came from KRISHNANAGAR and started staying in these villages.
The photographers, ameture and professionals, from all over the country and also from abroad throng KUMARTULI to capture the Idol making process and other activities of the people related to the making of idols.
Here i have put a very few photographs, not enough of course, of the activities of the potters who make the idols. I used DSLR NIKON 3200 and AFS NIKOR 18-105 Lens. Hope you will enjoy photos of KUMARTULI.
